What are the Differences Between M.Phil, and Ph.D.?  

Definition:

MPhil is a second Master’s degree program offering significant opportunities for students to gain advanced knowledge from carrying out advanced research work.

On the other hand, a Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D. happens to be a professional degree program that offers students expertise in a particular field and teaches them based on their research work.

Duration:

The normal duration for MPhil is two years. One year is for the student to face their course work, and the other year is for the submission of the dissertation. In Ph.D., the course duration is three years, but it can be prolonged to five years depending on the submission of the proposal and thesis approval.

Stipend:

MPhil students may not obtain any stipend, while doctorate students can acquire an allowance (stipend) to carry out their research project.

The MPhil students focus on research work carried out by other scholars in their fields. But the doctorate students need to submit original research work they have done in their field.

Program Structure:

For MPhil program, it comprises two important goals. The first is one-year course work and the other is dissertation submission carried out under the supervision of professors. The professor will examine this dissertation and see if there is any need for corrections before final submission. For Ph.D., the first year is for one year of course work, while the other two years are for thesis work supervised by an experienced supervisor.
