Paths to Switzerland Permanent Residency – How to Apply

In global rank, Switzerland is amongst the top 10 best countries for immigrants. However, application on becoming a Switzerland permanent residency isn’t a difficult process as long as you meet up to certain eligibility criteria and requirements.

It’s also stated that European Union countries and Schengen area citizens with some other countries are granted free entry (visa-free) to Switzerland for a short stay of about 90 days. However, anything above three months stay, they’ll need to apply for Swiss residence permit.

Paths to Switzerland Permanent Residency

Generally, before you can be able to reside permanently in Switzerland, you must have completed certain stages on residency in Switzerland and the time-frame depends, whether as an EU-citizen or non-EU citizen.

  1. On your first application for a residency permit in Switzerland, it’s either you receiver the “Permit B” or “Permit L”. The Permit B is for Resident foreign nationals. These are foreign nationals who reside in Switzerland for a longer period of time for a certain purpose, with or without gainful employment. However, this permit has 5 years validity for EU-27/EFTA nationals and annual validity for non EU/EFTA Nationals. While the Permit L is a short-term residence permit is granted to people working in Switzerland for typically up to one year
  2. For EU-27/EFTA nationals, after the period of 5 years with Permit B, they can simply apply for Switzerland permanent residence.
  3. For non EU/EFTA Nationals, they’re expected to stay continuous for 10 years with a Permit B before they can apply for Permit C which is a permanent resident permit. However, nationals from the US and Canada must stay for five uninterrupted years to apply for this permit.
  4. You can also be eligible for permanent residency in Switzerland if you’ve a spouse in Switzerland who’s either a Swiss citizen or a Permit C holder. If that’s the case, you’ll receive permanent residency in Switzerland after period of 5years.
  5. If you’re the child of a Swiss citizen or Permit C holder, in-between the ages of 12-18 years, you are eligible for Switzerland permanent residency. However, a child under 12, who migrates to Switzerland for family reunification automatically receives Swiss permanent resident permit.
